Following Huawei's lawsuit against Transsion for infringing on HEVC patents at the Munich Division of the Unified Patent Court (UPC) in Europe (case number: ACT_28975/2025), the latest court documents show that Huawei filed a second lawsuit with the Mannheim Regional Division of the UPC on July 25 (Case No.: ACT_33610/2025), involving another HEVC key technology patent, EP3471419. This move marks Huawei's further intensification of its litigation strategy following the failure of negotiations between the two parties.

It is understood that the patents in both cases belong to the HEVC Advance patent pool managed by Access Advance.
Comparison of Technical Disputes in the Two Cases
Two lawsuits filed within a month (the first case filed on June 20, the new case on July 25) indicate that the parties were unable to bridge their differences in licensing negotiations. Although Transsion has recently reached licensing agreements with Philips (AAC/USAC patents) and Via LA, and holds licenses from Qualcomm and Nokia, it still faces multiple challenges in the HEVC field: Huawei has become the fourth licensor to sue Transsion for HEVC infringement at the UPC, following NEC, JVC Kenwood, and Sun Patent Trust; there are also pending HEVC patent lawsuits in emerging markets such as Brazil.
Overview of Transsion's Global SEP Litigation
In mid-July, market research firm Canalys released the global and Chinese market rankings for the top five smartphone sales and market share in the second quarter of 2025. Globally, Transsion ranked fifth with an 8.5% market share. According to Transsion Holdings' 2024 annual report, the company shipped approximately 201 million smartphones in 2024, an increase from 194 million in 2023. According to IDC data, Transsion held a 14.0% market share in the global smartphone market in 2024, ranking third among global smartphone brands; among smartphones, it held an 8.7% market share in the global smartphone market, ranking fourth. Notably, the scope of defendants in the new case has been expanded to include Transsion's subsidiary Tekpoint GmbH, potentially targeting Transsion's European sales channels.
