Official Litigation Information
Beyond this case, overseas media outlet IP Fray reports that Huawei and Sharp are jointly suing Disney in Munich's First Regional Court. Both companies are patent holders within the Avanci Video patent pool.
Notably, Disney has frequently faced litigation in the streaming media sector in recent years. In November 2024, technology company Adeia sued Disney in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware, alleging that Disney's streaming services—including Hulu, ESPN+, and Disney+—infringed six of Adeia's patents related to video streaming technology.
Recently, the two parties reached a long-term licensing agreement, with Adeia granting Disney access to its comprehensive media intellectual property portfolio. This settlement resolves all pending litigation and covers the products and services previously involved in the dispute.
Additionally, since February this year, InterDigital has announced enforcement actions against Disney's multimedia standard essential patents (SEPs) in multiple jurisdictions. Courts involved currently include the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, the State Court of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, the Regional Court of Munich in Germany, and the Mannheim and Düsseldorf chambers of the Unified Patent Court (UPC). Patents involved include EP 2 465 265, EP 3 259 902, EP 2 080 349, and EP 2 449 782. In response, Disney initiated FRAND and antitrust litigation against InterDigital in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware.
On November 3, 2025, the Munich Regional Court ruled that Disney infringed one of InterDigital's patents, granting InterDigital the right to seek an injunction. The patent in question supports technology enabling the dynamic overlay of a second video stream containing subtitles onto a first video stream.
