On August 1, 2025, the Munich Regional Court ordered Innoscience to cease sales of gallium nitride products in Germany, ruling that its products infringed on Infineon's German patent DE 102014113465 B4. Additionally, Innoscience must pay damages (case number: 21 O 13132/24).
Infineon Technologies was established in Munich, Germany, on April 1, 1999, as the successor to Siemens Group's semiconductor division. Innoscience was founded in 2015 and is a high-tech enterprise engaged in the research, development, and industrialization of third-generation semiconductor silicon-based gallium nitride.
The gallium nitride in the involved products is primarily used in computer chips. Compared to traditional silicon semiconductors, gallium nitride chips enable lighter chargers, making them particularly sought after by electric vehicle manufacturers. This technology is also applied in renewable energy, data centers, and industrial automation fields.
According to Infineon's report, it holds approximately 450 GaN patent families and acquired Canadian company GaN Systems for US$830 million in 2023. In 2024, Infineon filed multiple patent infringement lawsuits against Innosea at the Munich Local Court. On June 12, the Munich Local Court issued a preliminary injunction prohibiting Innosea from displaying the alleged products at PCIM Europe 2024, a globally renowned electronics industry exhibition held in Nuremberg.
Additionally, in March 2024, Infineon, through its subsidiary Infineon Austria Technology AG, filed lawsuits against Innosea and its U.S. subsidiaries and affiliated companies, seeking a permanent injunction in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California regarding alleged infringement of a U.S. patent related to GaN technology.
In response, Innosea filed a patent invalidity lawsuit with the German Federal Patent Court and submitted a request for revocation of the relevant utility model to the German Patent and Trademark Office. In January 2025, Innosea announced that it had filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Infineon Technologies (China) Co., Ltd., Infineon Technologies (Wuxi) Co., Ltd., and Suzhou Xinwo Ke Electronic Technology Co., Ltd. with the Suzhou Intermediate People's Court.
