On November 19, 2024, Google sued its former engineer Harshit Roy in federal court in Texas, accusing the engineer of stealing trade secrets related to the company's chip designs and publicly sharing them on the Internet.
Google said in the complaint that Harshit Roy was hired by Google in 2020 to work on the development of computer chips for Google Pixel devices. He resigned in February and moved from Bangalore, India, to the United States in August to pursue a doctorate at the University of Texas at Austin. After that, Harshit Roy began Posting confidential information about Google on his X (formerly known as Twitter) account. Its specific acts include:
1. Post with "subversive language" directed at Google, such as "Don't expect me to abide by any non-disclosure agreements."
2. The post included a photo of an internal Google file containing specifications for the Pixel's processing chip.
3. Posting on social media claiming domination of Google's trade secrets and making threatening statements about the company.
4. Ignored Google's takedown requests and posted more trade secrets on X and LinkedIn since October.
5. Competitors such as Apple and Qualcomm were flagged in some posts, presumably to maximize the potential harm of their disclosures.
Google's complaint also mentions that multiple news outlets published stories about confidential details of Google devices based on information leaked by Harshit Roy.
